COVID-19 HOUSEHOLD PLAN
Now that schools, restaurants, and other organizations have closed down for the next two weeks (this timeline may change), and businesses have instituted a work from home plan, it’s time to look within the confines of our homes and create a “household plan” during these challenging times.
Implementing Your Family’s Plan
First, talk with the people who need to be included in your household plan. Meet with household members, other relatives, and friends to discuss the potential of COVID-19 breaking out within your community and your household’s response. Determine the needs and responsibilities of each member of your household if this should occur.
PLAN FOR HIGHER RISK INDIVIDUALS:
Plan ways to care for family members who may be at greater risk for exposure to this virus. Older adults and persons who have lower immunity (chronic medical conditions) are at greater risk for more serious complications if the virus should pass to your community. If you feel your family members may be at risk, do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider to provide guidance on monitoring symptoms. The CDC has recommended actions to help keep people at high risk should the outbreak occur in your community.
KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS:
Get to know your neighbors. Talk with your next-door neighbors about a community emergency plan. Check to see if your neighborhood has a social media page or website to better stay informed. This will help your family maintain access to neighborhood information and resources.
Identify organizations in your community that provide support and aid. Create a list of local organizations that you or your family can contact in the event you need quick access to healthcare services and other forms of support. Consider including organizations that provide counseling, food and first aid supplies. Post this on your refrigerator for quick access and update your household of its location.
Create an emergency contact list. Make sure your family has an updated list of emergency contacts for family, friends, carpool drivers, schools, doctors, employers, local public health department and other community resources. Again, place it in an obvious place for quick reference such as your refrigerator.
Maintain good personal health habits while at home. It’s wise to remind everyone in your home the importance of staying on top of preventative actions to help spread respiratory illnesses.
Daily Preventative Tasks:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Clean frequently touched surfaces daily
- Continue to wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum for 20 seconds
Implementing a household plan during these challenging times can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep loved ones safe. Stay health and stay well!
